Congratulations! Your student has made the decision to study abroad. This will be an excellent opportunity for them to grow personally, inter-culturally, academically and professionally. Your support and interest will help immensely in his/her success. The information below will help to answer some of the questions that you might have. Students participating in UA study-abroad programs will receive information from the host university or program provider, the program director (when applicable) and the overseas study advisor. This information will be distributed via email and during program meetings and orientations.

Program Types

UA Faculty-Led Programs

Priority is given to students with an overall grade point average of 2.20 or above. Students below the 2.20 GPA may petition for admission with the CIAP director and the summer program director. Students pay a program fee that includes tuition, housing abroad, in-country travel, international insurance, and other on-site expenses.  Generally, this fee DOES NOT include airfare.   Students will be issued a permit to pay by CIAP once they complete their application and will pay directly through Student Receivables.

Quick Facts: UA Faculty-Led Programs

  • Summer (typically 2-5 weeks)
  • Program fee includes UA tuition at in-state rate for all participants
  • 2.2 GPA requirement
  • Study, internship, and service learning options
  • Open to Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students
*Faculty-Led programs vary from year to year, and a complete listing of all summer programs will be available mid-fall.

UA Semester Exchange Programs

A student must hold a 3.0 GPA at the time of application. Language requirements vary by program. Students must be enrolled at UA for at least one semester before participation. Students pay UA tuition and fees directly to Student Receivables or through Mybama and pay housing and living expenses to the host university, for most programs. A full-exchange option (payment of tuition, housing, and meals at UA is available at Kansai Gaidai University only).

Students apply for the exchange program, a committee of UA faculty reveiw applications and make nominations of applicants to the prefered host university abroad. If the nomination is accepted, the applicant will be given information on how to complete the admission application for the exchange university abroad.

Exchange program participants will be enrolled in a CIP placeholder course while they are abroad.  Credits will be evaluated and applied to their UA transcripts upon the receipt of their international transcript. Students receive institutional, pass/fail credit for exchange programs.

Notes:
1. Students will be billed for mandatory international insurance for these programs.

2. Any early withdrawal from the program, whether by decision of the student or as a consequence of disenrollment, shall not entitle the student to any refund of the payments required for the program. Any extra expenses associated with early withdrawal from the program are the responsibility of the student. The student should consider the academic impact that an early withdrawal will have on her/his official academic record.

UA Affiliate and Direct Enroll Programs

GPA requirements vary by program.  Students are billed by the program provider or the host institution and pay fees directly to host.  UA students are enrolled in a CIP placeholder course and credit will be awarded upon receipt of their program transcript.  Programs awarding credit through a US institution of higher education will be reflected on the UA transcript as graded transfer credit.  Programs awarding credit through accredited international institutions will be reflected on the UA transcript as UA pass/fail credit.

Note:
1. These programs have a $100 course/administration fee and will also be billed for mandatory international insurance automatically.
